Event Recap
Written by 謝啟彬 (Director of the society · teacher at Miaoli Agricultural and Industrial Vocational High School)
From 6 May to 26 May, through the second SEL class at the school, we saw change quietly taking place. The third class is planned for 10 June — and this journey is the most precious gift we can give the students and staff.
In an age obsessed with speed, we often forget to stop and listen to our inner voice. SEL is not just education — it is a practice of love. Through its five core competencies, we are helping young people build resilience that will stay with them for life:
- Self-awareness: learning to recognise emotions and to embrace our strengths and weaknesses with kindness.
- Self-management: pressing pause when impulses arise, regulating ourselves gracefully and working towards our goals.
- Social awareness: seeing what others need, and using empathy to bridge different cultures and perspectives.
- Relationship skills: building bridges of communication and healthy, trusting, positive relationships.
- Responsible decision-making: making the best choices for ourselves and for society in a turbulent world.
"Step by step, slowly forward — no comparing, no rushing, moving ahead at the pace of slow living."
This is our classroom motto and our promise to life. We hope to be a great tree beside the young people and their companions, helping them understand emotions and learn empathy. Because we believe that when the heart is steady, our steps are sure.
Our sincere thanks to the K-12 Education Administration for its quality education funding for life education, to the Slow Living Education Society of Taiwan for its professional leadership, and to the Miaoli City Library for its resources. Because you walk with us, this path of nourishing hearts is in full bloom.
